Learning Leaders Must Know Tech Selection to Stay Relevant, Says Report

According to a new Association for Talent Development (ATD) report released on October 2, talent development professionals must sharpen their ability to choose learning technologies. The report highlights that many organizations plan to adopt AI-enabled learning technology to support future content development.

About 60% of 362 learning professionals said they can effectively assess their organization’s learning technology needs. However, nearly half admitted that identifying the right tools remains a challenge. This skill gap could affect how learning leaders contribute to digital transformation efforts.

Johann Laville, Chief Learning Officer at Merck, emphasized that choosing learning technologies has not always been a core skill for learning professionals. He noted that technology decisions should serve both the organization and its employees. Laville added that if learning professionals don’t build IT and technology assessment skills, others may step in to make those choices.

Tech Skills Now Critical for Learning and Development

The ATD report revealed that most organizations rely on learning management systems, e-learning authoring platforms, and digital assessment tools. However, as businesses integrate AI in learning and development (L&D), the need for technology fluency among learning leaders continues to rise.
